Abstract

Outcome measures are essential in plastic surgery to assess the effectiveness and safety of surgical procedures. This issue of Clinics in Plastic Surgery focuses on the latest developments in outcome measures in plastic surgery, including patient-reported outcomes, objective measures, and the use of technology to track outcomes. Articles in this issue provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in outcome measurement in plastic surgery and discuss future directions for research and development.

Outcome measures are essential in plastic surgery to assess the effectiveness and safety of surgical procedures. They allow surgeons to track patient progress, compare different techniques, and identify areas for improvement. Outcome measures can also be used to inform patients about the risks and benefits of surgery and to help them make informed decisions about their care.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing and using patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in plastic surgery. PROs are measures that are collected directly from patients and reflect their own experiences and perceptions of their surgery. PROs can provide valuable information about the impact of surgery on patients' quality of life, function, and satisfaction.

In addition to PROs, there are a number of other objective measures that can be used to assess outcomes in plastic surgery. These measures include physical examination, photographic documentation, and radiographic imaging. Objective measures can provide valuable information about the technical aspects of surgery and can be used to track changes over time.

The use of technology is also playing an increasingly important role in outcome measurement in plastic surgery. Electronic health records (EHRs) can be used to collect and track patient data, and mobile health (mHealth) devices can be used to collect patient-reported outcomes and track patient progress remotely.
