This book examines the changing structure of farm incomes and wealth in Britain over a seventy year period from 1911 to 1981. Using both survey and aggregate data, it considers the changes in the size distribution of incomes and wealth, the sources of income and the factors that affect their distribution.
The book finds that the distribution of farm incomes became more unequal over the period, with the top 10% of farmers receiving an increasing share of total income. The distribution of farm wealth also became more unequal, with the top 10% of farmers owning an increasing share of total wealth. The book also finds that the sources of farm income changed over the period, with an increasing share of income coming from off-farm sources.
The book concludes that the changes in the distribution of farm incomes and wealth were due to a number of factors, including the increasing importance of off-farm income, the increasing capital intensity of agriculture, and the changing structure of agricultural production.
