The Scarlet Lion: William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke
William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, was one of the most renowned knights of the Middle Ages. He fought in some of the most famous battles of the period, including the Battle of Bouvines and the Siege of Damietta. He was also a skilled diplomat and administrator, and served as regent of England during the minority of King Henry III.
Early life
William Marshal was born in about 1146, the son of John Marshal, a minor knight in the service of King Henry II of England. William's mother was Sibyl, the daughter of Patrick de Salisbury, Earl of Salisbury. William was raised in the royal household, and he quickly became known for his skill in arms and his loyalty to the king.

Military career
William Marshal began his military career in the service of King Henry II. He fought in several campaigns in France and Ireland, and he quickly established himself as one of the most promising young knights in the kingdom. In 1189, William was knighted by King Richard I, and he went on to fight in the Third Crusade. He distinguished himself at the Siege of Acre, and he was one of the first knights to enter the city when it fell to the Crusaders.
After the Third Crusade, William Marshal returned to England and continued to serve King Richard I. He fought in the Battle of Gisors in 1198, and he was one of the king's most trusted advisors. When King Richard I died in 1199, William Marshal supported the claim of his brother, King John, to the throne. He fought against King John's rivals in the First Barons' War, and he played a key role in the king's victory.
In 1204, William Marshal was created Earl of Pembroke by King John. He continued to serve the king loyally, and he fought in several campaigns in France and Ireland. In 1216, William Marshal was one of the leaders of the rebellion against King John, and he played a key role in forcing the king to sign the Magna Carta.
Later life
After the death of King John in 1216, William Marshal served as regent of England during the minority of King Henry III. He was a wise and capable administrator, and he helped to restore order to the kingdom. William Marshal died in 1219, and he was buried in the Temple Church in London.
