The Railfan Chronicles Detroit Mackinac Railway Volume 1975 To 1987 is a comprehensive look at the DM's history and operations. The book is written by railfan and author John Armstrong, and it is illustrated with hundreds of photographs.

The Detroit and Mackinac Railroad

The Detroit and Mackinac Railroad (DM&M) was incorporated in 1881. The DM&M built a line from Detroit to Mackinaw City, Michigan. The line was completed in 1882, and it quickly became an important part of the transportation system in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The DM&M also operated a number of branch lines, including a line from Cheboygan to Alpena, Michigan. The DM&M's lines were used to transport a variety of freight and passenger traffic, including lumber, iron ore, and tourists.

The Mackinac Transportation Company

The Mackinac Transportation Company (MTC) was formed in 1901. The MTC operated a fleet of car ferries that transported passengers and freight across the Straits of Mackinac. The MTC's ferries were used to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan.

The MTC also operated a number of other businesses, including a hotel and a resort. The MTC was a major part of the tourism industry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The Merger of the DM&M and the MTC

In 1975, the DM&M and the MTC merged to form the Detroit Mackinac Railway. The DM was a Class II railroad, and it operated a total of 365 miles of track. The DM's lines ran from Detroit to Mackinaw City, Michigan, and they included a number of branch lines.

The DM's Operations

The DM operated a variety of freight and passenger trains. The DM's freight trains transported a variety of commodities, including lumber, iron ore, and automobiles. The DM's passenger trains were used to transport tourists and commuters.

The DM's operations were based out of its headquarters in Tawas City, Michigan. The DM's locomotive shops were located in Cheboygan, Michigan. The DM also had a number of other facilities, including a freight yard in Detroit, Michigan.

The DM's Decline

The DM's operations began to decline in the early 1980s. The decline was due to a number of factors, including the decline of the manufacturing industry in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and the increasing popularity of trucking.

In 1987, the DM was acquired by the Huron and Eastern Railway. The H&E continued to operate the DM's lines until 1994, when they were abandoned.
