In 1832, Prussian general and military theorist Carl von Clausewitz published his seminal work on military strategy, On War. The book was a massive undertaking, and it is still considered one of the most important works on the subject ever written. But what many people don't know is that Clausewitz's book would never have seen the light of day without the help of a remarkable woman named Sarah Anne Gamble.

Gamble was born in 1795 in Ireland. She was the daughter of a wealthy landowner, and she received a good education. In 1814, she married English army officer John Gamble. The couple had four children, but their marriage was not a happy one. John Gamble was a heavy drinker and gambler, and he often abused his wife.
