Soseh Yekanians is an Iranian-Canadian filmmaker who has directed several award-winning films. Her work has been screened at international film festivals and has received critical acclaim. In this interview, she talks about her journey as a director and how her experiences have shaped her identity.
Q: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
A: I've always been drawn to storytelling. As a child, I loved to make up stories and tell them to my friends and family. When I was in high school, I took a film class and learned the basics of filmmaking. I was immediately hooked. I loved the challenge of creating something from nothing. I also loved the collaborative nature of filmmaking. It's such a great feeling to work with a team of people to bring a story to life.
Q: Your films often explore themes of identity and belonging. Why are these themes important to you?
A: I think identity is one of the most important things in life. It's what makes us unique and special. But it can also be a source of conflict and pain. I'm interested in exploring the different ways that people struggle with their identity. I want to help people understand that they're not alone, and that there is hope for finding their place in the world.
Q: You've directed several films about the Iranian-Canadian experience. What do you hope to achieve with these films?
A: I want to give a voice to the Iranian-Canadian community. We're a diverse and vibrant community, but our stories are often not told. I want to help change that. I want to show the world that we're more than just stereotypes. We're complex and multifaceted people. We have our own unique experiences and perspectives. And we have a lot to offer the world.
Q: What has been the most challenging part of your journey as a filmmaker?
A: The most challenging part has been the lack of funding. It's hard to make a film without money. You have to be creative and resourceful. You have to find ways to stretch your budget. But it's also important to remember that money isn't everything. Creativity and passion are more important. If you have a good story to tell, you'll find a way to make it.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring filmmakers?
A: Don't give up on your dreams. No matter what obstacles you face, keep going. There will be times when you feel like giving up, but don't let those feelings get the best of you. Remember why you started making films in the first place. And never stop believing in yourself.
